Thanks for the advice Kartof!

Yeah, I agree with you that it's not the most exciting looking book. I find studying
handwritten writing in bulgarian a bit confusing, mainly because the 3 main books I
use, Teach yourself, Assimil and Intensive Bulgarian all write the words slightly
differently. So sometimes I'm not sure which one I should be going off. I tend to go
over the dialog with my girlfriend, just to make sure I'm saying it correctly and get
any tips from a native speaker. Thanks again.

German                           28-07-12

The last couple of days I have been out with some friends so I didn't post my progress
for thursday and friday. Thursday I printed out a article from der Spiegel, I marked
down for words and expressions I didn't know and worked my way through that. I then
finished with watching a couple of episodes of 'How I met your mother' in German
obviously. Friday I wrote out the first 20 lessons of Assimil with Ease. I have gone
over these so many times before I almost know them off by heart, so it didn't take too
long.

Today, I printed another article out, this one on Apple vs Samsung as it looked
interesting. Went through the whole thing, I understood around 75%. There was many
words and expressions that I haven't come across yet. Tonight I will watch the
tagesschau.

Bulgarian

I have been going over the handwriting today, the Teach Yourself book has alot of
exercises so I have been trying to write those out. I went over the dialog again in the
"Intensive Bulgarian: A Textbook and Reference Grammar" book, and did the exercises and
the end of the lesson. I did well on the conjunction exercise (И or А), and got a few
wrong on the correct verb form exercise. example. Милена и Димитър си от Варна (should
be 'са')

I had more trouble on the exercise where I had to write the questions to the following
answers. For alot of the answers there are more than one way to form the question.

1. Ние пътуваме за Варна. - Къде за пътувате? (За къде пътувате?*)
2. Да, те са студенти.    - Сутденти ли са?   (correct)
3. Да, той е лекар.       - Лекар ли е?       (correct)
4. От София съм.         - Откъде сте?       (correct)
5. Той е от София, а тя е от Варна. - Откъде са? (correct)
6. Казвам се Милена.      - Как си казвате? (се*)
7. Той се казва Максим.   - Как си казвате той? (се* and no -тe should be казва)

I have a question regarding this, A couple of the answers have various ways you can ask
the question, what form would you find used more?

2. Те студенти ли са? or Студенти ли са?
3. Той лекар ли е? or Лекар ли е?
5. Откъде е той? Откъде е тя? or Откъде са те? or Откъде са?
7. Как се казва той? Как се казва?

Or are all the various forms used widely?

For the examples you gave (2,3,5, and 7), use of the subject pronoun merely adds stress
and you'll find both forms commonly used. It's as if you're directing attention to the
person(s) the question is asking about. It's completely optional though and is more
stylistic than anything.

By the way, for the answers to #6 and #7, it should be се and not си in both cases.

I haven't updated my log since the site had problems, I haven't been doing as much
study lately mainly because of my health problems and constantly spending my days going
from specialist to specialist and from test to test. I have finally put a day planner
in place, because my time management was pretty poor before, I wouldn't have a set
study time or anything, so I decided that it would be best to implement a bit of
discipline and have set times during the day to study.

Bulgarian

I think Bulgarian has been going rather well lately, I have moved on to lesson 2 of
Intensive Bulgarian: A text book and reference grammar. I felt comfortable with the
first lesson, I didn't go over the additional grammar notes because I don't like taking
such an intense grammatic approach when first learning a language. I purchased the
audio to TY Complete Bulgarian about a week ago from the book depository.com so I'm
hoping that will arrive shortly. I also have the Colloquial Bulgarian, however I'm not
sure how good this course is or If I should just stick to the resources I'm using at
the moment. I'm also thinking of making some videos for youtube, at this stage I would
probably just record myself reading the dialogs for pronunciation feedback, and when
I'm better, making videos of me speaking Bulgarian.

German

This week I have been reading a book called Das Herz von Dresden it's by Klett and at
B1 level, I have the audio as well, so have gone through it a couple of times and at
the end it has questions regarding the story. I have continued with the Assimil course
doing 2 lessons a day, and I hope to do more German in the coming days.

Bulgarian

Spent over 1 hour today editing audio, firstly for Bulgarian Reference Grammar, because
at the start of each track it has annoying music, so I cut them down to just the
dialogs, which took alot longer than expected, I did the same for the TY Bulgarian
Conversation audio and TY Bulgarian which just arrived. So now all the audio is similar
to Assimil, pure dialogs. Listened to the recording of dialog 2 about 9 times, followed
by reading it aloud and then translating back and forth.

German

Today was rather lite for German, I went through lesson 25,26,27,28 of Assimil German
with Ease and then watched the movie Gloomy Sunday. I finished today with lesson 7,8 of
Pimsleur, Which I'm finding rather quite boring as it's not a method I enjoy so I may
stop using it.
