I realised this morning that I have been on this site for two years exactly. On reflection I realised that my language goals have changed a little.
I originally wanted basic 'ability' say B1 in lots of languages. Now I want C1 (or C1+) in Spanish, French, German, plus a B2 in a Scandinavian language, Russian, and Arabic, plus a few phrases in others. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

My languages goals have changed a lot. In fact, they've changed so much it would be
excruciatingly boring to write (and then read) about all these changes. Some of these changes were triggered by HTLAL (I joined it almost 6 years ago!), some occurred because of new/different interests, various opportunities I had, or for professional reasons. Some of them are just a part of learning process, I guess. I'm pretty sure my goals will change a lot more as the time goes by. Among the changes: - I had a solid B2/C1 in English for a couple of years and I was completely satisified with it. Not any more ;), both English and German are on my exclusive list of languages that I probably won't ever be satisfied with. I enjoy them too much (and I need them too much) to settle for what I already know and move on. - recently, I've started my first non-European language (dabbling in touristy Turkish notwithstanding) - it's not serious and I haven't defined any learing goals yet other than mastering the script, but I can already see my attitude towards 'exotic' languages is changing: I've begun to think about trying (and possibly learning) Japanese, Korean, or Chinese, or a couple of other languages. That's not something I'm going to do tomorrow, the next week or the next year, but I used to be European-oriented so it is quite a change. - nowadays, I focus rather on passive skills than on speaking/writing. Especially writing is not something I really care about, unless it's English or German, or I'm thinking about passing a certificate in a given language. - I want to learn more/other languages than a few years ago. Italian and Czech that I waas actually learning are now on the "maybe sometime" list, whereas Dutch and Scandinavian languages are much more of interest. The list of languages I want to learn hasn't changed much, I've simply realized that I shouldn't learn Sanskrit or Hindi just because I love the writing system.
But like Julie, I also focus more on passive skills now, at least initially. I don't hate grammar but all those textbooks and exercises are so boring! I used to love studying the way I did, but now I can't study this way anymore. Not unless I'm going to do another super logical agglutinating language (like Finnish). In the Romance languages you need more memorization anyway, so why bother with all those stupid rules? It's enough for me to have my Latin as a foundation and build up using input and SRS from there. The most important change is that I no longer think "one day I'll take classes" when learning a language on my own. Italian was the first language I started learning without any intentions of classes. Doesn't mean I'll never take them but I no longer think of it as of an essential part of learning. I had my 2nd HTLAL B-day (which is apparently the same day as the real one, just how bored was I?) during the recent downtime. I dug up my introductory post shortly after the forum comeback, and well... the good news: I am more advanced now in all of my languages; the bad news: certainly not as advanced as you would expect from two years of activity and certainly less than I should be with all the things I think I have learned here.
In short: my goals remain largely the same because I'm not as closer to them as I'd like to be. Time to get hands on... Edit: yes, my long-term goals are firmer: C2 in everything, but one needs to make it to the short-term goals first, right? I joined the forum around a year ago. That time I was perfectly happy with my English, but wanted to learn Spanish as well as Russian.
My initial phase in Spanish studies was very active as I wanted to speak the language as soon as possible. After a while my goals changed as I figured out that I do not really like to speak any language at a low level. I am not really worried about activating my Spanish as from my previous studies I know that I can start to speak new language when I want, provided I understand it well enough. Having started Spanish learning with Pimsleur, Platiquemos and Assimil I really would not have to start speaking from scratch. It has really surprised me how much vocabulary is really needed just to read a quality novel. Now my Spanish learning is pretty passive, I read novels, el Mundo, el Marca and add 10 new words per day to Anki, which soon passes 10000 word mark. I feel quite like being in the middle of nowhere (B1-B2). I never imagined that vocabulary building would take this much effort. During the year my Spanish project has evolved into an English-Spanish vocabulary building project. I learn Spanish in English and it is hard to figure out if I really learn more new Spanish words or English synonyms. No longer I am happy with my English and my long-term dream is to achieve almost native-like vocabulary. These days I interact so heavily in English that gaps of my knowledge have started to bother me more and more. As Spanish and English take so much time I have abandoned or at least delayed plans of starting Russian studies or brushing up my Swedish or German. In the short term I've lurked the site then registered, all I wanted at first was a B2 in French.
Now that I feel I am quickly closing in on that, I now want: French/Italian C1 Spanish B2 German B2 Danish B1 Russian B1 Mandarin A2 Now that I'm seeing how much fun it is to learn a language, I want to learn more and more. I'm hoping to reach at least the majority of my goals before I graduate university. I think I can do it. :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |
