Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon? I have a B2 in French and I intend to
continue with it regularly until I am fluent. Recently, I've been study pretty
intensively and little by little I have started doing everything in French. Thinking to
myself (even speaking to myself like a crazy person!), playing videogames, using my
phone, reading, etc. I'm trying to immerse myself in the language as much as possible.

In fact, I find myself feeling guilty when I do something in English. If I'm listening
to a podcast in English, I should be listening to a French one. If I'm watching a
football match, I should turn off the English commentary and try to think about what is
going on in French. Same with books, films, even talking to other people (which can of
course only be done in English here)! I even feel like I should be writing this in
French. :P It all feels like a waste of precious immersion time.

All this has even led me to sometimes saying a few French words by accident when
talking to relatives. Kind of awkwardly funny.

Is this just a feeling us language nuts get? I'd love to hear your stories. I think the
one thing I have to watch out for is not exhausting myself, though.

Same for me with Japanese, but..
In fact, I spend too much time around here, in English. Can't even use Japanese in my own language log, because this forum hates Kanji and produces 文字化け.. corrupted text.

I think it's a natural phase, once you get to a certain level where using the language is more rewarding than frustrating. For me, that was the point when I suddenly realized how MUCH was available in my target language: culture, lyrics, history, slang, recipes, poetry, literature, jokes, puns, people, places... it was really like a whole new world was opening up, and who wants to stay on the "English-only" side of the fence when that tempting new universe is *right there*? :)

Or find a stream online and have it on. Or listen to foreign music. That's what I do :-)

Excellent reply. That's how I feel exactly. When I learned Portuguese, my English/Spanish world expanded exponentially. I also discovered I could take interactive open learning university courses in Portuguese, from a Brazilian University. I am really enjoying that I can do this entirely in Portuguese. I am learning non-language-related material in my TL.

Congratulations, @Swift on your accomplishment. I hope you continue to enjoy your powers in French.

I guess "burn out" can be a possibility, and hopefully varying your activities (which you
seem to be doing), but keeping it in the TL wherever possible, should help.

(A minor niggle though: (looking at the wording of your OP): it could also be done in
Irish there! - well, maybe....    :-) ).

I can relate. I am getting that way with German. Every time I pick up a book in English or go to watch an English movie, I feel bad because I'd rather be reading or watching in German. I find myself thinking in German sometimes even when I'm not actively trying.

I never got that way with French but that was more present in other aspects of my life than German is.
