I haven't chosen English, I was forced to learn because my city was colonised by the British.
I learnt Japanese because I like TV Games and Japanese animations.
I lean German because I would like to read some Psychological and Philisophical articles which are written in German.

My fascination for the Swedish language began primarily because both sides of my great great grandparents migrated from the country. I thought it would be one of the most exciting things to go and meet some long lost relatives there...and to be able to converse with them like a native. So that is where it all began. Only afterwards did I begin to change, and grow not only in a love for the language, but also the people.
Spanish was an easy second because it's the most useful to me. I live only 20 minutes from the Mexican-American border. I use it daily at my work, which helps with my pronunciation, but despite using it every day it's still very easy for me to feel inadequate in my speaking ability...and thus shy away from the conversation I could be having, and enjoying.

I'm learning Arabic because I really like the sound of the language. Also, I love the script, even though it's proving really tough to learn!
Russian and Greek are also on my "shopping list" since I have this fascination for languages with different alphabets. Before I learn them, however, I'll try an easier language, such as Catalan (love how it sounds).

I originally chose Spanish because it was useful (and still is) and was easy to learn but looking back I wish I would have chosen German or Russian because even though it would have been much more of a challenge I would have enjoyed it more. This is not to say I don't enjoy learning Spanish I just enjoy Russian and German more.

Ever since I was little I was fascinated with italy and the italian language. However, when I finally came to Europe for the first time and was living in England a friend asked me to move to Gibraltar (i had no idea where it was!). Living just across the border in La Linea, Spain I fell in love immediately with the Spanish culture and language! After slowly (and not entirely successfully) teaching myself for the past year I am once again living in spain (madrid) and this time hoping that total immersion and a lot of hard work will lead me to getting a pretty strong knowledge of the language. Italian is now on the back burner but will definately get a look in soon!

I first learned German because of distant relatives in Germany. I was also fairly young at the time, so I equated other languages with a kind of "secret code", and it made me feel like a spy.
I started learning Japanese because at the time I really liked Sailor Moon and Pokemon. I thought Japanese animation and comics were so bizarre and different than what we're used to, so I wanted to understand the people and the culture.
Learning Chinese started in high school with my Chinese friends trying to help me with kanji (the Japanese characters borrowed from China). I soon realized there was more to the whole "Asia" thing than Japan, so I wanted to learn more about other Far Asian languages cultures too. Plus, I loved the connections I could make between the languages, just like the connections between German and English.
I always tried to resist Romance languages because it was what "everyone else" was doing. But the sound of Italian, and Italian music, food, and history has always fascinated me. I really want to learn Italian, but I know it would probably be better to start with Spanish since it's the more "practical" of the two. So I'm facing an internal struggle at the moment. :)
I would also love to study Farsi, because I am an adopted Persian who knows nothing about my ancestors' culture, and Vietnamese, because it's the first language of my fiance and his family, so I think it would show respect.
I guess every language I've ever wanted to study are for personal enjoyment rather than practical reasons (with the potential exceptions of Spanish).
