I am also learning French and found Pimsleur rather tedious. Good
luck with your studies.

Ya, I might still use it when I can't look at a book (ie: jogging, shopping) if I have
nothing better. It really does burn those phrases into your mind and I can only listen
to
the Assimil CDs so many times and they have no explanations.

I'm definitely going to have to start using French in Action at home though. It looks
really cool from what I've seen of it.

Bonne chance avec vos études et merci pour votre visite!

I've finished up to and including:

Michel Thomas - Disk 7
Paul Noble - part one
Pimsleur 1 - up to half of #5

I realize Paul Noble and MT are rather redundant but I'm interested in comparing. I
have to say, I do like losing the students for the native speaker. Its painful to have
to hear them struggle.

Its convenient to be able to use these audio based methods while exercising but I do
find myself wanting to see text and tables to confirm and affirm what I'm learning.

I'm considering going to Quebec in September. I'd like to have at least basic travel
phrases down.

Quick update before bed.

Pimsleur 1 - completed lesson #6 at work.
I may want to re-listen on my own time so I can answer the prompts out loud
but then again the material is re-hashed in future lessons.

Michel Thomas - Disk 8, Track 9 completed
I will use the review for the prompts.

I'd like to do more Assimil but I feel compelled to do Pimsleur as I want
to have a lot of active vocabulary and phrases for when I visit Quebec.

I'm considering getting Berlitz - French for your Trip.

This may be a better phrase book for your trip:
Le québécois pour mieux voyager

Thanks for the trip-tip, Microsnout.   I've added it to my "liste cadeaux". ChiaBrain: new copies are
currently significantly cheaper on Amazon.ca than on Amazon.com : $9.95 (Cdn) vs. $22.47 . Amazon.ca also
ships from Canada, whereas I notice that the new dot-com copy on sale is coming from France, so postage costs for
the former should be lower too (since neither qualify for free "domestic shipping" to the U.S.).

Thanks for the tips, folks.
I also found this link:

Quick update:
I finished Michel Thomas and did some of the review CD.
I also did lessons 1 - 3 of French in Action which I loved. FiA is a trip!

Normally at this point I would focus on input with Assimil and French in Action but since
I'm going to need some output soon I think I'll continue with Michel Thomas, Paul Noble,
Pimsleur and get both those phrasebooks. The one has audio which I can use for shadowing and
the other will give me specifics for le Francais Quebecois.

Completed Michel Thomas Review CD 1 today. I missed more than I wanted to but I was able
to understand why my output was incorrect.

I also listened to some RFI Journale in Francais Facile.

I'm thinking about doing FSI French FAST next.

Been awhile, but I've been studying even if not as regularly as would be ideal.

I've completed lesson 10 of Pimsleur 1 and lesson 5 of Assimil.
I'm planning on continuing with those and also with Michel Thomas.
I do like his explanations even if listening to his student's responses can be painful.
With Pimsleur I don't always respond to the prompts mostly because I am semi-occupied
(exercising, shopping, cleaning) when I do the lessons. I might try pausing it or going
back when this happens.

I've also been doing a lot of unstructured learning consisting mostly of:
asking myself how I'd say something, reading any French text I come across and listening
to French news, usually RFI's Journal en Francais Facile.
