I've been testing out my son's iPod to see if I'd want to use that or the iPad to boost my language study. (I'm not the Anki type, though...)
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here understood how Apple organizes its various international stores. For instance, I was searching for the French version of Scrabble and I couldn't find it. Apparently, it's not available in Canada, so it appears I'd need a French account. I also want to get Japanese books and I can only see English books in the bookstore... Will I need to create a Japanese account with a fake address to do so? How does that work? Or does the language set on the iPod determine the results you get (I didn't test that)?
Any info on that topic would be greatly appreciated.

The option for changing the country is down at the bottom of the main iTunes Store page (Manage > Change Country). You can change the country there, but you'd also need to create a new profile and probably buy vouchers for the French iTunes Store online to purchase apps there. (I haven't tried this yet, since I mostly use free apps and podcasts.)
As for Japanese books, if you have an iPod Touch or an iPhone you can get the free Stanza ebook reader and download some Japanese Public Domain books from Feedbooks.
Stanza also comes with a desktop application that allows you to convert all kinds of input formats to the epub format. You can also transfer ebooks bought from other stores via WLAN to your Stanza app on your iPod Touch or iPhone. I have it on my iPhone and use it all the time to read books.

My son had a $0.52 credit, and having a credit prevents you from changing your profile (if I understood correctly).
I really would like to purchase Japanese books from the iPod Touch, if at all possible...

I have quite a few books (including Japanese language ones) in pdf format and I use GoodReader for iPad to read them.

Reading them is fine, it's getting them that's the problem!

I realise that, but getting them is also easy if you know where to look :)

How informative...
Alex, if you go on Amazon.jp you can use it in English but I think your Japanese would be good enough to use it.
I would seriously reccomend the Japan centre that ships stuff to Canada www.japancentre.com
You could always ask any Japanese people you know to order them for you.
Another site I know of is http://www.nippon-export.com/ which I have never used myself though it looks good.
I think changing the Ipod setting would work. I know I pods do Japanese but I don't own one so I can't really comment...
Josh
