Splog, I agree with you totally. Repetitions in short "bursts" are best if they happen regularly.
Long-period shadowing is a bit similar to listening-reading where you more or less listen-read a book from beginning to end without knowing every word beforehand. Big picture first, details later. The same thing with shadowing. Get prosody/rhythm/"flow" first, and individual sounds (+ meaning) later.
