Recently, with the east-west divide no more, many Eastern European people have immigrated to Western European countries. This gives us an incentive to learn the languages of these populations.
I myself have great interest in the Slavic language family. So far I have only dabbled in Russian and Serbo-Croatian and donĀ“t yet speak any of them fluently, but as a learning goal I would like to learn several of them to fluency.
Which Slavic immigrants are more numerous by each Western European country?
In the United Kingdom Polish immigrants are the largest Slavic speaking immigrant group. For someone living in the UK, I believe that Polish would be an excellent choice as a first Slavic language.
In Spain it seems that Bulgarians are the largest Slavic speaking group. Russians also have a presence there but seem less numerous than Bulgarian immigrants.
Who are the largest Slavic immigrant groups in other European countries like Italy, France, Portugal, Germany, etc...?

In Italy, Spain, and Portugal (and other places) you will find a lot of Moldovan immigrants who likely speak Russian
and sometimes even Ukrainian. Almost 40% of Moldova's GDP is from remittances from these countries and Russia.

In Germany there are huge numbers of "Aussiedler", historically ethnic German immigrants to Germany, mainly from Russia. They are far more numerous than the working commuters from the Slavic central Europe. Therefore I would vote for Russian in Germany, if only heads counts.

Where I live in the United States (Michigan) there's a lot of recently-arrived Russian-speaking immigrants. Historically there have a lot of Poles as well, but they've been here for so long that they don't speak Polish any more.
