I think that some Bulgarians do start to lose their knowledge of the language after a few generations but I
know of several second generation Bulgarians who speak the language natively or bilingually with English.
The Bulgarian diaspora in New York is relatively young with most immigrants coming after the fall of
Communism and very few coming from before then. In Chicago, the diaspora is older and came from the
1880s to 1920s; a lot of Bulgarian cultural events occur there and the Bulgarian President, Rosen Plevneliev,
is visiting there in the near future so I'm guessing that a significant number of third and fourth generation
Bulgarians have preserved their knowledge of the language there.

Reading this thread made me think if there are any Bulgarian schools out there in USA/Australia, and if yes, would parents be prone to send their children there (in parallel with their usual studies in an American/Australian etc. school), or they teach their children their mother tongue themselves? I just recalled that I've seen a reportage about such school kind of in Spain (I think.)

No, there aren't many Bulgarian schools around here I think. The only one that comes to mind was the one
at the Bulgarian embassy in New York which I went to for a couple of lessons several years ago but I quit
when I realized that it was way too basic for the level at which I was. However, I have a few friends who
continued to go there for several years. Most children who do learn, learn from their parents.
