Its been awhile since I posted an update. Yeah alot has changed since I started this
log. I have moved back from new zealand to the US. I have a new job and I study Spanish
on my way to work. I didn't get my goal of fluency by june of 2012, but I am unofficialy
at an intermediate level.

My new goal is to get to Fluency by the end of the year. After I am fluent I want to
start another language project. This would either be Mandarin, Samoan, or ASL. What
does everyone think of those?

They seem to have very different fields of use. I would have chosen Mandarin, but if you need to
communicate with someone who uses ASL or Samoan, then I guess they may be a better choice for you.

I vote for Samoan! I plan to one day take that up myself, because it's so interesting culturally and sounds great. I've already started a log for it, too, and collected all resources I could find. It would be great if someone else at the forum was studying it... Of course, Mandarin is also extremely interesting. I also plan to study that soon :D And ASL seems like the perfect language for when you want to study 2 languages at the same time.

Maybe I should have mentioned my reasoning for each. Since learning Thai, I have
wanted to learn another Asian language and Mandarin just seems the most interesting to
me.

Samoan is part of my family, by law. My father in law is from Apia, though he didn't
pass the culture/language to my wife. I am proud to say my kids are 1/4 samoan, but I
want them to be able to really understand that they are Samoan, and I think language
would go along way to helping that. Showing off to my father in law would help too.

ASL, comes from when I got conversational with Thai Sign Language. I have since lost
it, but that exposure has led me to be fascinated with ASL ever since. There is a
isolated group of people that we don't understand. Most people don't even realize that
ASL is not signed English.

None of this is a need. out of all of them, Mandarin would have the most potential to
be beneficial for work, but I don't learn languages for that reason. Anyway They all
seem difficult choices to decided between.
