– Discovered Assimil, my new favourite (I can actually remember that I leafed through Assimil El catalán sin
esfuerzo in a bookstore in Barcelona almost 20 years ago, but I didn't buy it then.)
– Discovered Berlitz Self-Teacher, Cortina, Hugo and Living Language
– Learnt German from zero knowledge to a level where I can read it without much problem and hold simple
conversations, although I don't feel very comfortable speaking or writing it
– Learnt French to more or less the same level as my German (I still knew a little bit of French from school.)
– Bought even more dictionaries, grammars and language learning materials
– Improved my written English by regularly writing on this forum
– Spent countless hours on this forum
– Wasted a lot of time waiting for pages to load on this forum
– Written more than 1000 posts here

- Took Dutch from a low B1 to B1+, now on the verge of B2.
It doesn't sound like that much, but going from barely understanding people when they speak to carrying on a good
conversation and enjoying thick novels is a big deal to me. Especially in just 168 days.

My achievements since registering here four years ago are pretty modest compared to some people here, but for me they are still significant.
-I have taken Japanese from zero (complete beginner) to around B1, and this Sunday I'll be sitting the JLPT N3 for "fun".
-I can read (and enjoy) texts aimed at 6-8 year olds and manga aimed at any age. Sadly grown up novels are still too much of an effort (and I'm not a fan of sitting through a whole book with a dictionary on hand).
-Now when I look at Japanese text, the sounds for kana and familiar kanji pop into my head pretty much automatically. When I think that back when I was 26, my brain simply couldn't do that, I find it quite pleasantly astonishing.
-I can watch TV shows and get the gist of them, and sometimes I forget I am listening to Japanese and laugh at the jokes without even thinking about it (but I'm still at the stage where if I think about it too much, it becomes harder to understand).
-I have actually had conversations with real Japanese people, in Japanese.
-I have made friends with people that I never would have had the opportunity to connect with were it not for my Japanese project
-I have discovered that actually communicating in another language, no matter how imperfect, is really good fun.
-I have achieved all this while working full time (apart from the first month or so) and have managed to earn myself a Masters degree (related to my job, not language) along the way too.
Four years ago I was unemployed, lacking direction, bored, lonely and generally disappointed about a lack of achievement in my early twenties. This was the impetus for me starting my language project in the first place and the information on this site provided me with the confidence that it was possible.

-Discovered Destinos, Notes in Spanish, and Iversen's Wordlist Method
-Leveled-up from A1+/A2 to B1. I would have made more progress, but I allowed school and
other nonsense to get in the way. That won't happen again.
-Realized that language learning is a part of my life, and always will be, largely thanks
to the wonderful community here, and all of its participants that keep me motivated.
I've only achieved B1 language in one other language, but this whole polyglot thing just
seems like a challenge, nothing more. In 10 years, I hope to be speaking 3-5 other
languages, adding up to 5-7 languages in total.

-advanced fluency in Finnish
-not far from basic fluency in about 5 languages
But a lot of what I've learned here is not just about languages or even cultures, but apply to various spheres in life, for example: everyone is different, you need to experiment to find out what works for you etc... The most important learning technique I found is SRS; the most important language specific ones are shadowing and extensive reading.
Also, without this forum I'd be lost when I got bored with formal study.

I joined just a little over three months ago:
-I read The Count of Monte Cristo in the original French, my second French story after Le Petit Prince
-I read Naguib Mahfouz's ثرثرة فوق النيل (Chitchat On the Nile)
-I've achieved what I think is high A2 in Portuguese
-I've learned the Hebrew alphabet
-I've learned about wordlisting
-I've been consistently watching three Arabic shows, one Persian, and two French channels
-I've been more tempted to give in to wanderlust than ever before :P

I perhaps haven't achieved all that much, but I've learned a lot of good ideas and
received a lot of inspiration, and discovered a lot of people who are even nuttier than
me (that's a Joke :-) ) about languages. Found an incredible number of useful links,
and opened my eyes (and I hope my mind) to a lot of new ways of approaching language.
As another poster alluded to, it might have been an even nicer experience if I hadn't
had to wait so long for pages to be loaded, but on the whole, it was worth the wait.
It's been an interesting experience, and although I will never achieve as much as many
here have already achieved, in a strange kind of way, I still feel very much "at home"
here.
So thanks for that, to the many people who have contributed.

Realized that I would need at least a couple of lifetimes to achieve all that I wish, yet I'm going ahead with my plans nonetheless.
So I discovered that either I'm optimistic to a fault or plain mad.
