I don't think I've "sacrificed" anything to get started with Japanese.

I'm watching less TV and I'm no longer listening to the car radio during the commute, but
I find it difficult to see these as anything other than a gain.

My reading of books from the library (English, Italian and French) has slowed down
considerably, but they'll still be there in a few years time.

I've sacrificed money to buy materials and time to study. I didn't mind doing any of it.

I suppose I should hasten to add that I don't mind making these sacrifices, I
love doing what I'm doing, it has enriched my life in innumerable ways.

I'm surprised how few people say they are making sacrifices though. Language learning
takes so long, I would of assumed a lot of people would have to set things aside in
order to make progress, there being only so many hours in the day. In particular, I
imagine that those learning cat.4 languages like Mandarin or Japanese would have to set
aside nearly everything should they wish to achieve proficiency anytime in the next 5
years or so.

I suppose it hinges on your definition of "sacrifice".

@espejimo yes I like those kinds of music, and most other types of electronic music. I
loved being able to understand a few Spanish sentences dropped into a tune I was
listening to recently.

What sacrifices have I made for the sake of language learning?

All the time I would have normally spent posting my lame observations on this forum.

The main sacrifice I've made is not spending anywhere near as much time as I used to
studying music and practising guitar, since languages have made a big dent in my already
fairly limited "hobby time". I'm still trying to find a balance between the two; I love
both but languages have very much taken over in the last year or two. I sometimes think
about how good I'd be at guitar by now if I hadn't discovered languages, but then I
realise that I prefer being a decent guitarist who can converse in French and Italian
than an awesome guitarist who can't :). Also, the limited time forces me to make my music
practice more focused and efficient, and so I'm still improving reasonably despite only
picking up the guitar a couple of times per week.

I spend a lot of time on languages, but it can't be seen as a sacrifice as long as I enjoy it. For many years I was just as busy writing, playing and listening to music (classical sheet music), and I have also painted surrealistic paintings for more than 30 years in a row. But for various reasons I dropped my active involvement in both things several years before I began my current involvement with languages - and therefore I had some free time to spend.

The only tiny minuscule and quite insignificant circumstance that could be seen as a partial sacrifice is that my travels have had a tendency become more focused on Europe because that's where I find the largest diversity of languages which I can speak.

I limit the amount of time I spend with my native English friends, I've given up English books (except for language based ones like 'Babel No More') and only watch films in English with my family or English friends, never voluntarily.

I've also refused many extra teaching hours and therefore money, because I didn't want it to take time away from my language studies.

I also have to put up with a bit more stress, because my wife gets irritated with me devoting more time to languages than to her.

As other people have said though, it's not really a sacrifice, because I wouldn't have it any other way.

What do I sacrifice for my language studies?

- Listening to the radio
- Watching TV
- Reading newspapers or books in Norwegian
- Reading books in English
- Sleep
- Time with my friends
- Marital quality time
- Gardening
- Cleaning (a heavy sacrifice indeed :-)
- Ironing (even worse...)
- Organizing family pictures
- Time with my extended family

It is an easy sacrifice to make, but if somebody drops another bomb on Oslo I am unlikely to notice because I am listening to some language course at the time...
