A quick question to anyone who's ever visited or lived in New York...

I'll be moving to Hawai'i in a little over a month's time and will stop over in New York for a day between flights (which I'm already getting excited about!). I know there's not much time at all to take in the sights but I was wondering what you'd put on your "must see" list given only 24 hours?

Any suggestions welcome. :)

Since you have recently added Ancient Egyptian to your list of languages, it might be a good idea to take a look at "The Dawn of Egyptian Art" exhibition at the Met. I don't know what kind of art you like, but the Met is definitely a good place to start your sight-seeing. I would then stroll through Central Park down to 59th street (unless you want to take a detour to the Upper West Side/Lincoln Center/Strawberry Fields memorial, etc.), and then... well, it really depends on what other museums/ladnmarks/streets you absolutely want to see!

If you like museums, like espejismo said, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is world-class. If you prefer relatively small but still top-notch collections, The Frick Collection comes to mind. Setting the art aside, the Museum of Natural History is very good. There are many other museums of all sorts - look through a list for any more specialized ones that may interest you.

If you prefer taking in the sights and sounds, as well as doing some people-watching, Central Park is certainly a good recommendation. You can rent a rowboat on a little lake there as well if you want to relax. If you prefer city streets, when I was a student, I enjoyed starting out near Columbia University on Broadway & 116th street in Manhattan and walking down Broadway towards Greenwich Village in the Southern part of the island, sometimes alone, sometimes with friends. This is about 1/2 to 2/3 of the length of Manhattan, so you have to like this kind of wandering. I always found it to be great fun. One can devise many other walking tours, of course.

You can take a bus tour to give you a bit of the flavor of the city. Finally, you can take a boat tour around Manhattan. I think it lasts about 3 hours, and it's fun, but for a first-timer I suspect not as much fun as being in the city. You may want to indicate your interests and preferences for more targeted suggestions.

@espejismo
Thanks for the tips about Central Park and 59th Street! I don't think we'll have enough time to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art along with everything else unfortunately, especially as we fancy walking around the city a bit more and taking in the sights, but I'll certainly check it out.

I love the idea of wandering around Manhattan and Broadway (although I probably won't be engaged in quite as much monologue as Woody Allen). Great idea! :)

Rizzoli Bookstore

You could always try this place!

When walking around you will hear a lot of different languages. I always like that.

Russians giving advice about New York :)))))

I've never been to New York but I have this saved in my memories for when I go there one day:

While in NYC, be sure to take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. http://www.siferry.com/SIFerry_Schedules.aspx To avoid crowds, take the trip after "rush hour." Just go and then take the next ferry back to Manhattan. You will get an amazing view of the NYC skyline and pass right by the Statue of Liberty. The skyline is particularly impressive at night -- but not too late because then the lights in the office buildings will have been turned off.

lasting just 25 mins (one way), this seems like a nice alternative to the 3h boat tour:)

Hey, there's lots of us in NY. ;)

It had never occurred to me to take the ferry for fun, probably because I heard so many horror stories from my high school classmates who were commuting to Manhattan from Staten Island.

I would imagine it's also nice to view the city from the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset.
