I am not sure the two would be equivalent. Although the first time I did the boat tour around Manhattan was at night (it was part of the freshman orientation organized by the college I went to), the second time was in daytime, and while it was a bit less romantic, it was a good deal more interesting. Manhattan has always been known for its tall buildings, but they were not all built at the same time. I find the older ones, from the 1930's or 40's I suppose, but maybe a bit earlier and a bit later too, to be somehow warmer, more pleasant, and more interesting architecturally than some of the later buildings. My recollection is that you get to see a number of the older ones during that boat cruise, many of them at the midtown level. You may or may not get to see that from the ferry, although, having never taken it, I don't really know where it docks in Manhattan. Don't forget to call into the Strand bookstore and pick up a few more language books. I've been there twice and always ended up buying something.

So many great ideas...thank you all very much for your tips so far!! :D
My wife's already laid down the law on visiting bookstores (lol - maybe I'll be permitted a quick peak along the way) but everything else gets the thumbs up. Hitching a ride on the Staten Island ferry or going on a boat trip sounds like a good plan to catch vistas of the Statue of Liberty and Manhatten's skyline (I always love being around water too!), and then there's Central Park, Greenwich Village, and watching the setting sun from Brooklyn Bridge. Loads of superb ideas already... After watching "Barefoot in the Park" and "Manhatten" again this weekend to get me in the mood, I realise that there must be plenty of famous movie locations in NYC too. I'd probably walk by them and not even notice without anyone nudging me to look in the right direction. I'll have to do a bit of research before I go, I guess. I'm now mainly wondering if anyone knows somewhere interesting and tasty to eat in NYC? I've heard that the Big Apple has some amazing cafés and restaurants. Maybe I should head over to Chinatown or Little Italy in the evening (I haven't got a clue where to go really though)?? Any recommendations would be very welcome on this front. As far as museums go, I would certainly second the MMA and the Frick. However, if you're only there for a day, the MMA is too huge and overwhelming, and you'd wear yourself out trying to see everything interesting in it in a day. The Frick, on the other hand, is small, beautiful, and not crowded,and you could spend a few hours there and see most of it. If you're staying in Midtown Manhattan or the Upper East Side, both are a pleasant (and safe) walk past all the fancy shops and Central Park.

You have a lot of ferry options if you're interested in a boat ride.
Ferries ! But - The Statue of Liberty is in New Jersey! I'm told that I was taken for a ferry ride at the age of three or four and was terrified because I thought it was God. You have to tell little kids if there's going to be a huge, looming being outside the window! I vaguely remember this . . . As for other really, really big things, the Freedom Tower is getting very tall - but this name is not catching on around here, everyone still calls it the World Trade Center. Over the past year I've watched it more than double in height. And don't forget, although I'm sure I don't have to tell you, to pick up pamphlets and other free sightseeing publications, because they are available in many languages !
