In the early stages of learning a language, say from beginner to mid-intermediate, do you like people to correct you when you speak? I'm talking about outside of the classroom, and speaking specifically (not writing or typing).

I really appreciate when people correct me. I mean, how else are you supposed to learn? But most of the time, I correct my own grammar, so other people tend to correct my pronunciation and word choice.

If I am not corrected, I am not going to make any progress. Or at least not at the pace I'd like to; I wouldn't want errors to become routine.
So this goes for anyone on this forum - should you see any mistakes in my writing, however minute they might be, feel free to correct me.
I don't see why people should have a problem with that here. We are, one imagines, a language learning forum.

But if you're a beginner trying to make a conversation, it's clear that you're going to make a ton of mistakes and if there is someone correcting every second word you say, the conversation will not lead anywhere and you will not be learning at all, loose the audacity to talk in other situations and so on..

IMHO people talking to beginners should bare this in mind. I vote for correcting only obvious mistakes.

p.s.: is the word 'obvious' spelled intentionally wrong in the poll table? :-)

I selected other because there's a time and a place to be corrected and I'd rather be corrected by a friend while we're having a nice conversation than be corrected by a complete stranger while I'm trying to buy a train ticket or a coffee (for example). Maybe it's a cultural thing but if strangers correct me to my face I find it rude and maybe even insulting especially if I'm only a beginner.

I picked 'other'. It varies. If I'm trying to have a conversation, and am at that level, probably not(*). If it's in a didactic situation, maybe; at that point, it also varies on factors such as how the corrections are given.

(*)I'd be happy to have a slightly-wordier reply with a fixed form (ie, if I mis-stated a question, to have a corrected form as the beginning of the answer, when it could be omitted), pretty much regardless of circumstances.

Basically I never make misstakes and don't knead to be coreccted. It is just embarrassing to see people making fools of themselves by trying to corect me, while they are in the wrong themselves ...

... ahem, I hope noone took that seriously, just kidding.

I voted "other" because it depends on a lot of things.

Except for a classroom setting, having all mistakes corrected all the time could end up being too disruptive to the flow of conversation, especially in a group of several people, and if you get more input than you are able to take in it might not be useful. But generally I'd welcome being corrected a little more than what I usually am.

I especially appreciate being corrected on my repeated mistakes, helping to clear up something I have misunderstood about the language. And the correcting should be done in a polite and helpful way of course.
