Week 5 - 5/21
I'm happy to report that my studies are progressing nicely despite my being very busy with other things. I completed all of my goals for week 4, so I am now at 10 sections of grammar completed, 8 units of FSI finished, and ~375 vocab words. I also attended a Spanish Catholic mass on Sunday, and although I struggled to communicate, I was able to function reasonably well and could even understand bits and pieces of the sermon. Growing up Catholic definitely helped with this; I knew where I needed to go and how I should act, so the only barrier was linguistic, not sociocultural.
I've also started reading the book "Breaking out of Beginner's Spanish" which has been very interesting and helpful. What I'm currently missing at the moment is the opportunity to speak Spanish. I had hoped to go to the Spanish conversation hours, but apparently that is not continuing through the summer. Now that my Spanish is somewhat better, I'll try to use it with my Spanish-speaking friends, but unfortunately they all happen to be out of my city currently.
Goals for Week 5:
-Future Tense, Past Definite Tense, Irregular Verbs
-FSI Units 9-10
-125 Vocab words
-Review the last few sections of Coffee Break Spanish (lessons 28-31) and continue with new lessons.

Week 6 - 5/29
I am now starting the second half of my 10 weeks of learning Spanish. I should probably explain what I mean when I say I'm learning Spanish for 10 weeks: although I plan on continuing to learn Spanish after that, I won't be spending as much time on it, what with starting my PhD, and also after week 10 I will be spending 3.5 weeks backpacking in the mountains, and therefore not learning a foreign language.
I did not quite finish my goals for last week. My excuse was that I was out of town from Thursday night to Monday night looking for a new apartment. I feel pretty good about my goals for this week; I think I'll be able to make up for (somewhat) falling off the wagon last week.
What I accomplished last week was the Future Tense and Past Definite Tense grammar sections, FSI Units 9 and the first half of 10, learned about 100 new vocab words, and moved forward to lesson 33 on Coffee Break Spanish.
Goals for Week 6:
-Irregular Verbs, Comparatives and Superlatives, Word Order, and Conditional Tense
-FSI Units 10, 11, 12
-150 Vocab words
-Get through lesson 39 in Coffee Break Spanish
