I often like listening to the sound of a language I myself don't know or don't come across too often. There are just languages we rarely ever hear, or those of whom we are not too sure what they sound like or if we'd even recognize them. That's why I "collect" clips in other languages/dialects on YouTube.

As this is a language forum and we are obviously all interested in languages, I thought I'd share my humble findings here.

Sri Lankan Tamil news

Armenian news

Funny Ukranian news clip

Slovak news clip

Czech news clip

Clip in Griko (dialect of Greek spoken in southern Italy)

Poetry in Griko

Khmer news

Urdu news

Indonesian news

Amazigh news

Funny clip in Barese (southern Italian dialect)

Another clip from the same movie (in Baresian)

News clip in Georgian

Story told in Tok Pisin

Clip about the Aromanian language in Macedonia (in Aromanian, but I might be wrong)

Poem in Wallonian

Clip in spoken Sanskrit

Short course in Oshiwambo

Short course in Khoekhoe

Irish Gaelic video log

Welsh language broadcast

Nuntii Latini (Latin news)

The Lord's Prayer in Old English

Frisian model Doutzen Kroes promoting the Frisian language in the Netherlands

Albanian comedy

Clip in Basque

Croatian spoof of "The Weakest Link"

News in Yiddish

Phua Chu Kang (series in Singlish)

Latin hexameter demonstrated

Short speech in Farsi

------------------------------------------------------------ -----

Thought it was time for a little update...

Old Turkish news clip

Punjabi news clip

Gujarati news clip

Malayalam comedy

Burmese news

One of the clips from Salma, one of the many Hausa movies available on YouTube!

Movie clip dubbed into Tagalog

Clip of a pashto drama (series?)

Clip from one of the many Yoruba dramas available on YouTube

Sindhi comedy

More will follow, stay tuned...

Do you personally have any languages that are well-known, but of whom you have no idea what they sound like? What language have you never heard? Did you find a language that you never heard among these clips that you hadn't heard before? What was your impression of it?

Thank you for putting this together! For me, it was very curious to hear creole languages related to Spanish, such as Papiamento (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0ogldoC-wc&feature=related) and Chabacano of Zamboanga (a Spanish TV report on Chabacano: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7E-M4ML5SLg&feature=fvsr), thanks to YouTube.

You should have NEVER EVER posted that!

Now I will want to learn more languages than ever! XD

Well, I didn't have time to see all the videos, but I love Irish and Welsh. They sound a bit mysterious and at the same time strangely Asian for me. Basque was also very awesome to hear and so was Georgian. I was a bit surprised that Yiddish sounded a LOT like German, and even Frisian sounds more similar to German than English, although it's supposed to be the closest language to English (well, if you don't count Scots as a language that is).

I'm pleasantly shocked to discover how Sanskrit sounds very similar to Hindi commercials I watched in Sri Lanka, and I could even spot some Sinhalese words in the speech. Like "mama" for I and "nama" for name. Albanian was also cool and so was Armenian. Croatian sounded so AMAZING and Mystical that I really want to study that language now (although I don't think I'll ever visit the region). I'm a bit disappointed that Farsi didn't sound very pleasant to my ear though.

So... Croatian, Yiddish, Irish, Welsh, Frisian and Basque.. to learn or not to learn, that is the question..

Thanks Gilgamesh for posting this list! What a great find, I also love listening to clips of languages I'm not familiar
with, especially the more obscure ones where there isn't a lot of material available.
