I have read it time and time again that Esperanto is a walk in the park to learn is this true. I have read that it can be learnt in a matter of months but that does not mean very much. It would not be hard to study 200 hours in three months for example.
How many hours of study is needed on average?
I watched a clip on you tube and for some bizzare reason I was able to understand a fair bit.

How many hours will depend on your method, how well you learn, and what languages you are already familiar with. It is impossible to give an exact figure, but you should be able to get to a pretty advanced level with a few months' effort.
Esperanto is a ridiculously easy language to learn. It is by far the easiest language I have ever studied. Of course it will still take a considerable amount of effort, as learning any language does, but it will take much less effort than even an easy language like Spanish or Dutch. The spelling is perfectly phonetic, the grammar is logical and completely regular, the vocabulary is pretty transparent to anyone familiar with a couple western European languages (it mostly comes from English, French, German, Italian and Latin), and idiomatic expressions are deliberately avoided. With Esperanto, you don't have to worry about wording things exactly like a native speaker would. As long as it's grammatically correct and it gets the meaning across, it's perfectly good Esperanto.
