What does this Esperanto word mean? | ||

I'm currently reading The Hobbit in Esperanto, and I've come across a word I can't puzzle out. Here is the sentence:
"Fagoj kreskis tie ĝis la rivera bordo, kaj ties piedeskaj radikoj trempiĝis en la akvo." So the translation is: "Beech trees grew there up to the river's edge, and their ??? roots were soaked in the water." I've googled and searched lernu for "piedesk*" and found no results, so it looks like a compound word (and "piedo" = "foot" so that makes sense), but I can't find any meaning for "esk*". I had wondered if it were an unofficial suffix, but the best list I know of (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanto_vocabulary#List_of_l exical_suffixes) didn't include it. And yeah, I'm still hanging in there. I haven't kept up my TAC log very well, but I read several pages of The Hobbit each day during my lunch breaks, I've subscribed to Monato and Kontako, and I listen to the Radio Verda and Radio Polskie podcasts regularly. My listening comprehension is still lagging frustratingly behind my reading comprehension, but a few weeks ago I had one of those sudden jumps in my reading ability after a long period of stagnation. So I figure that if I just keep plugging away, the same will eventually happen for my listening ability. 1 person has voted this message useful | |
