The Pillows: a wide variety of music; even my wife likes them. We play their album "Wake Up! Wake Up! Wake Up!" in the car. "Serious Plan" has some bonus Spanish, Russian and German.
Asian Kung-Fu Generation: their albums vary a lot, but I like "Fanclub" and "World World World". |

Seconded, although I don't think that Asian Kung-Fu Generation's sound varies very much. I agree that those two albums are their best.
I'm not sure what you like, but I lean more towards indie rock and jazz. If that's your thing, you might like:
Ego-Wrappin': My favourite Japanese band, but not many people I've introduced them to have liked them, unfortunately. 老いぼれ犬の口笛 is a nice slow song, and だるい is also good.
andymori: Fairly standard indie pop. Most of their songs have very fast singing, so aren't all that good for learning Japanese, but Life is Party is nice and understandable.
I also don't think you can go wrong with Shiina Ringo (椎名林檎) and Tokyo Jihen (東京事変), of which she is a member. I haven't listened to all of their albums, but 'Adult' is my favourite.

That's Koda Kumi - another guilty pleasure of mine ;) |

I think there's a more recent version with the most fantastic slap bass intro.

I always wondered why the song with Japanese lyrics, "Sukiyaki," a big hit by Kyu Sakamoto in the US in the early 60s sounded so "wistful," when it was obviously a song about food.
Wikipedia wrote:
The song reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the United States in 1963, and was the only Japanese language song to do so. In total it sold over 13 million copies internationally...
The recording was originally released in Japan by Toshiba in 1961. It topped the Popular Music Selling Record chart in the Japanese magazine Music Life for three months, and was ranked as the number one song of 1961 in Japan. |

SUKIYAKI vid w/Lyrics - Kyu Sakamoto
I only recently got my answer:
Wikipedia wrote:
The title, sukiyaki (which is a Japanese steamboat dish), has nothing to do with the lyrics or the meaning of the song; the word served the purpose only because it was short, catchy, recognizably Japanese, and more familiar to most English speakers. A Newsweek columnist noted that the re-titling was like issuing "Moon River" in Japan under the title "Beef Stew." |

Anyway, has anyone mentioned SHAKA LABBITS yet? They have a lot of songs in Japanese on YouTube, but I just cannot get enough of this punky vid of their cover song from the Tom Hanks TV movie:
Shaka Labbits - THAT THING YOU DO!

I know it's a long abandoned thread but thought I might contribute a little. I don't listen to Japanese music but I remember hearing songs like these on TV and the radio back in the days (I included some that are relatively new.)
Do As Infinity
Bump of Chicken
Fragile / Every Little Thing
Zard (May she rest in peace.)
Look Back Again /
Rip Slyme
Dragon Ash
Ah, those were the days...
