liekkas

My friend posted this on her fb. Nice song isn't it? Apparently it's in some rarely spoken language - does anyone know what the language is and what (essentially) the lyrics of the song mean?

EDIT: Sorry but, upon closer look, the language is Sami...
I do like the flow of it, so... graceful. My friend wants to learn it, but I guess she can only mimic the sounds, without the benefit of knowing what the song means... Actually, I want to learn it too...

Well, the language looks like this one (more likely dialect):

Sami languages

Northern Saami to be precise - and it may have traces of the Torne dialect (here are the lyrics and a translation to English).

It can indeed be very appealing in song. Here is some more music in the language which has grown on me as I study it:

Du čalmmit
Máddji
Ii iđit vel
Ii lea voibmi (based on what I've learned it should be "Ii leat vuoibmi" but considering that the song was composed by a Finn who was inspired by Saamic culture, the mistakes in the title aren't overly surprising to me)

You're welcome (or as we can say in Northern Saami: Leage buorre! / Na eale dearvan!)

...and if you ever want even to dip your toes in these languages, check out the Saamic profile for some information and don't hesitate to contact me.

Wow, that was really comprehensive. While I might not be interested in learning the languages, I'm definitely interested in learning the song. Perhaps I would need your help when it comes to pronunciations, and from there, who knows what happens next.
