Well, I mean do not switch if you really want to practise under all circumstances.
Maybe you have a different stategy, but if I want to practise, I practise regardless of how bad and how much I struggle just to avoid using English in any way. I mean, if we as Anglophones someone talked to you in English in the USA and had serious problems communicating, would you be willing to switch to their language despite it not being an official language? Besides, they might switch to English anyway without your having to consider it, which has happened to me at times. But the key is to get to a certain listening level and pronunciation level where this should not be needed. They can function in Norwegian in Sweden and vice versa in Norway if needed. Maybe just me, but it is enriching to just avoid English at all costs outside of Anglophone countries if you want language practise. But you already said,

I think 1e4e6's point is that you can get by with basic Norwegian if you want, without reverting to English. And my point (in case you missed it) is that your Norwegian will work 100% in Sweden.
Even if you have a US accent, Scandinavians won't change to English unless they have to. It's a question of doing the job with the least effort. If you struggle with sentences and have an incomprehensible pronunciation and the person in front of you knows English, changing languages solves the problem quicker. I always speak Norwegian in Sweden. No problem. The only times I make an attempt at speaking Swedish is

They always subtitle Swedish on NRK, they do the same to Norwegian on SVT. There was even a scandal in Sweden, regarding a Norwegian soap opera: http://www.expressen.se/noje/nils-schwartz-svenska-tv-tittar e-vill-se-svenska-skadespelare/ There's a lot of jokes about norskarna in Sweden and vice versa. Norwegians tend to understand better Swedish than the other way around. Last time Tone Damli was on NRJ she spoke in a very Swedized version of Bokmaal, that's nowhere near to her spoken Norwegian (Sogndal dialect is what she speaks in Norway).
