I'm currently working on a thesis concerning language learning of low-resource languages. Could some of you spare a few minutes and fill out a form? This would be of great help. There are up to 60 questions, but you can choose to submit early or jump over questions. Every single answered question is helpful :)

The survey consists of some short text snippets written in Nynorsk and you will be asked to rate the English translations for one of the words per snippet. So if you are able to understand easy texts written in Nynorsk (eg. online news) - by whatever means - you would be able to fill this out. You only need to understand enough of the text to figure out which of the translations are applicable (because words are ambiguous of course), the rest is more about your intuitions in English. If you have never tried to read in Nynorsk (but know other Scandinavian languages), why don't you put your skills to test with this short article for example? The text snippets are not much more difficult than that.

More detailed background information and instructions can be found at my homepage: http://www.coli.uni-saarland.de/~stefane/
There you also find the link to start the survey.

Thanks for helping out!

Hi deagga, before I go further, does it make any sense for a native Norwegian to do this survey?

Yes, I need data from both native speakers and learners. And you will be able to indicate if Nynorsk is your hovedmål or not (but I don't really expect much difference between sidemål and hovedmål writers).
Thanks for taking your time.

The examples and the proposed translations remind me of Google translate on a bad day..

Could you elaborate? Language use or content? Or were they too ambiguous, ie. would there be need for larger context windows?

I did the survey yesterday, and as Iversen I found that the translations proposed were quite baffling sometimes. It was really Google on a bad day. I found the meaning of the words in the nynorsk texts quite straightforward, but sometimes none of the proposed translations seemed adequate.

What do you mean by low-resource languages?

There are quite a lot Norwegian learning resources out there, especially for earlier levels.
