I figure I'd make this thread dedicated to my Norwegian questions instead of making a new one every time.
My question is about the pronunciation of B. I've been listening to Pimsleur and when they say "ha det bra", sometimes the "bra" sounds like it's pronounced with a B (as expected), but sometimes it sounds like it's pronounced with a D, kind of like saying "draw" with the flipped R. At first I thought maybe the audio just wasn't clear on the Pimsleur tapes but I was watching a youtube video and it sounded like he was using the D sound there too. I've looked in my books and found nothing about an alternative pronunciation of B. Am I going crazy or is this a feature of the language? 1 person has voted this message useful | |

OK, Norwegian and Swedish work the same way: the d- in det can be a flap-r (especially in intervocalic positions), the -t in det isn't pronounced at all, and therefore the b- in bra can be soft (or intervocalic, as in Spanish). The quality of the -r- after a supposed soft b may be flapped.

I'm having trouble finding the youtube video that I heard it in, but here is a segment from the Pimsleur tape, listen especially to the second time he says "bra". I guess if I listen closely I can kind of hear it as a B, but it overall still sounds like a D to me.

sounds just like a [ b ] to me ... try to compare "bra" with "dra" if you can find

Then it's just me. I usually have a good ear for that kind of stuff but I suppose the [ b ] sound in Norwegian is a bit more of a quick pop that my American ears aren't used to. I was thinking it was maybe one of those things where the sound depended on the letter that came before or after it, kind of like the liaison in French. Thanks for the clarification!
