Hi,

Today as I was studying Spanish I came across two Spanish words that were in Subjunctive form. My
question is that I have never come across subjunctive before so how do I study them or use them I guess is a
better word. I was studying my Berlitz Basic Spanish book Unit 1. I was very surprised to come across two
subjunctive this early in the book.

Any advice?

I'm sure it's covered later in the series. Don't worry much about it until you get to that section.

Often times it is just because it is difficult to give a lot of different examples or write a text without the subjunctive. Both the Assimil course and the FSI course use the subjunctive in some of the very early lessons. I still remember thinking Assimil had a lot of spelling mistakes when I started using it (later realizing it was the subjunctive). Just go with it and be happy you realize they are using the subjunctive and not just making spelling mistakes :)

I recommend getting as well other sources. Grammar books like Gramatica de Uso dedicate several pages to subjunctivo, to various uses and formation.

And a lot will get clear once you progress enough to start using some authentic input, subjunctivo is everywhere, you will get used to it fast :-)
