Can someone explain "chingar"? | ||

I have been speaking with natives (mostly from Mexico) for more than a year now and I still don't understand this word. Apparently, sometimes it is bad in meaning, sometimes funny, sometimes not? Is this only Mexican slang or is this word prevalent in other countries?
I don't know how this forum's polices affect questions dealing with slang, and curse words, but I really need to understand this word's usage. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I'm kind of an expert on that subject ...... because I use that word a lot, and lots of people I know use it too. Mainly, it is considered a "bad word" ... depending on how you use it, it could sound funny (for some people), I really use it a lot in a funny way (or that's what my friends tell me). It can have several meanings: -To Annoy/To Bother .- No estés chingando -To F*ck/To rape .- mmmmmmm.....I'll pass this one -To cause a harm/damage .- Ya chingaste la computadora -To work hard .- Me chingo trabajando todo el día -To break down (a car, an appliance,etc.) .- ya se chingó el coche -To fail (a business, a project) .- ya se chingó el negocio. -To trick/to con/to defraud/to swindle .- Trató de chingarme. It can be used in some expressions, for example: Go f*ck yourself is similar to: vete a chingar a tu .... / vete a la chingada And many more ..... but I'll stop here. Discussions about slang are welcome, this is an essential part of the real language. So, could someone tell us about what chingar means, perhaps in the same mode as the famous "Forget About it" scene in Donnie Brasco?

I think the closest translation would be "to f***" or "to f*** up", but as rggg demonstrated it has its own peculiar uses and connotations not shared by those English expressions. But as I am not a native speaker, I can't give a comprehensive explanation of the word.

So are the usages you mentioned (besides to f*ck, to rape) considered rude or vulgar? I don't plan on using the word myself, but I want to know if someone is being vulgar. I'm afraid "chingar" is considered a rude word, I only use that word and its derivated words with my friends, and like I said before mostly in a funny way .... I think you need a lot of exposure to examples in real life situations in order to understand how to use it in a non-rude way.
It would be: "Vamos a darle A LA chinga" more or less it means: Let's get to work (a hard work) Also: "Darle UNA chinga" = To beat someone up or To do something (cleaning, painting, working, etc.) but with the intention of non-stopping until it's done. Now I'm starting to feel a little embarrassed explaining these things ...but I think it's too late. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I have only ever heard or read about it in a Mexican context. My guess is that it is limited to Mexico but I might be wrong. It is likely to be understood most anywhere though. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

In Central America "chingar" is not a bad word, it just means "to bother/to annoy". In Mexico is a very bad word, no matter how you use it. It's funny because when we hear the very common Mexican insult "chinga tu madre" we understand that our mothers are annoying.
Similar situation happens with the word "cabrón". In Guatemala it means someone very smart or sagacious, in Mexico is a nasty insult and a bad word. I don't know if "chingar" is used in South America or the Caribbean. 3 persons have voted this message useful |
