So I'm in Andalucía right now for a few months studying Castellano at the Universidad
de Cadiz. Right now I'm trying to polish my Spanish until it's so shiny you could see
it from Space. But, I have a desire to learn Catalan in the future. I don't have time
nor want to confuse it with all the heavy-duty Castellano studying I'm doing, but I
figure it'd be a good idea to pick up an arsenal or at least a few resources while I'm
here. But when I get back to the US it´d be nice to have some Catalan things to study
with.

I'm going to Barcelona literally for 48 hours to visit a buddy on a whim in April, and
I need some bookstores or names of resources that would be the best to help a Spanish
speaker achieve a good handle on Catalan. I only need a few, not going to study
academically only for my own desire of being able to converse in it when I return to
the Països Catalans I can use it.

I know from reading past posts that Catalán sin Esfuerzo is rumored to be very good,
but what else? Since I´ll be in Barcelona, I figured their might be a good bookstore
that someone on here knows that otherwise I couldn´t find.

Thanks Y'all!

I've never been to Barcelona, I'm sure there are piles of resources people could tell you
about. Personally, I'd try to pick up some Spanish DVDs dubbed into Catalan (I haven't
found any native Catalan series on DVD) but I enjoyed watching Heroes seasons 1 and 2 in
Catalan, and it helped me pick up a bit of passive understanding. However, you would need
a region free DVD player back in the US.

@Gallo1801,

You could try Curso Pons Catalàn for Spanish speakers. It has one book and two cds. One interesting section is the list of false cognates. I met a person from Barcelona and he knew immediately what program I was talking about. This does not mean all people in Barcelona know of the program. It was just coincidence.

Here's a thread about Catalan resources:

As for bookstores, I haven't been to Barcelona for at least ten years, but as far as I remember there used to be a
bookstore with lots of language learning materials and dictionaries in Carrer de Balmes, between Gran Via and
Carrer de la Diputació (just across the street from the old university building). Casa del Llibre in Passeig de Gràcia
is probably worth a visit too. If I remember correctly, there's another bookstore with quite a lot of Catalan
materials in Passeig de Gràcia, on the left hand side when you walk up the street from Plaça de Catalunya towards
Diagonal, but I don't remember exactly where or what it was called. It's quite small, and the language stuff was in
the basement. The easiest thing in any Spanish city is always to go to El Corte Inglés. They have just about
everything, including books. Just across the street from El Corte Inglés at Plaça de Catalunya you'll also find
Llibreria Catalònia in Ronda de Sant Pere.

Thanks! I'll have to mark those down and go a-hunting when I get there. I like
supporting the local joints if possible especially given "La Crisis" so I'll go check
out those.
