Hi all. I'm new here, I'm a native speaker of Irish and English and I also speak fluent French and Italian. I have two
goals for the next twelve months. The first is to get my intermediate German up to advanced fluent standard, and the second to learn Yoruba to a level of basic fluency. I'm getting on quite well with German. I took a course at the Goethe Institute last year which was great, and I'm now working on it on my own. I love the language, and find it very logical. I'm mainly listening to podcasts, watching German movies and reading newspaper articles. My German dictionary is my new best friend. As for Yoruba, I've only just started to learn it. It is, of course, totally different from any other language I speak, but I really want to learn it as it is so beautiful, and also I think African languages are overlooked so often by those seeking to learn a foreign language, which is a pity as so many African countries are so rich in culture. I realise my goal of basic fluency within a year in a language totally unrelated to any I speak may seem ambitious, but I am determined to do it! I have started with Yoruba by watching youtube videos, but have ordered a 'teach yourself' book and a dictionary which I expect to come in the post very soon. I'll keep you posted.
