Hi everyone :-)
Just wondering if anyone uses the lnkword technique and how they find it? ive been using it fo build up my German vocabulary, is it a good long-term solution though since you're learning by association?
happy learning.
Ryan. :-)

This is one of the most important techniques that you can learn not only as regards language learning, but also other stuff that has to be memorized at short notice. However, when I use this technique I only use it on words that won't stick in my memory despite repeated exposure to them.
So my advice would be to get some exposure to the words you're trying to learn. You'll soon notice which words you have mastered and which ones you tend to forget. It is the latter group of words that you should target with mnemonic devices.
Regarding the effectiveness of mnemonics in the long-term, I'd say that it's similar to material learned by other means - use it or lose it. Even with mnemonics, you'll need to revise the material from time to time. Mnemonics might stick in your brain for longer initially than material learned by other methods, but at some point you'll need to revisit the material that you've learned...

Thanks, :-)
I've found that it works well and has enhanced my progress in learning vocabulary. I use linkwordlanguages software at the moment, are there any other resources availible for this kind of learning?
Ryan. :-)

There are a few books that use mnemonics for languages such as Spanish, French and German. You might want to check out some of Michael Gruneberg's material.
There are also books relying on mnemonics to teach foreing writing systems:
There is a book for Japanese called "Remembering The Kanji" by James Heisig, that uses mnemonics.
For Chinese characters there's "Learning Chinese Characters" published by Tuttle that follows a similar system, but also adds mnemonics for the sound of the characters.
I myself have written a book for learning the Arabic alphabet through mnemonics.
