Humans depend on these teeming waters for comfort and survival, yet global warming and overfishing threaten to leave the ocean agitated and empty.

Can we use whereas instead yet in this sentence?

"Whereas" is used to compare and contrast two similar but independent facts or actions.

"Yet" takes two related facts or actions and says that the second is true, even though we would expect it to be false after reading the first.
