Whilst I would love to be able to make all my flashcards L2, I'm currently not at a stage where I can do that.
I currently have a vocabulary of about 1000 and surely it takes a huge vocabulary to be able to explain a vocab item in other vocab? For example a 'boat' is 'something that floats on the sea and transports things'. But to explain that I'll need float, sea and transport not to mention the grammar! So it seems this it a relatively advanced study technique! Does anyone have any advice for the stage I am at? Despite what some would have you believe, there's really nothing wrong with a little translation while your still in
the studying stages. People have been doing this for hundreds if not thousands of years, and I haven't ever heard languages are being learned faster these days. I agree what Javi said about sentences. I like to use flashcards mostly for words, and try to get my sentences practice from using the language. If you spend a lot of your time messing around with sentence flashcards, it will take away from your real reading practice. However, to each his own. It's good to try to strike a balance. And there's nothing wrong with having flashcards go both ways. F2 to F1 is much easier, but it's been proven that having some easy material in your flashcards is helpful. 1 person has voted this message useful |
