I am at home studying a lot (not just Spanish because I am in college as well). Usually I have the tv on in the background , its loud enough so I can hear it and understand what is going on while I am studying. My question is, starting today, I have decided to keep my TV on Spanish progamming only. I can understand some things they are saying while I study and I wonder if this type of "passive" learning (since I'm not actually looking at the tv and watching the program) will be worth the sacrifice or if I'm better off only having the tv on Spanish programs when I will actually be watching the show.
Have you used this method before? Does it work, what are your thoughts?

It's a useful supplement; no more, no less. It helps, but a fairly limited amount.

I think 'watching' it is far better than simply listening. I've picked up so much from just watching cartoons in Spanish. Some easy ones to understand were Bambi 2, Little mermaid and other old disney films. I tend to have 1 - 1.5 hours a day of watching TV, a few hours listening, but at least 5-6 hours of proper studying using rosetta stone v3, books, and websites. Also talking to my friends. I've found that just listening to Spanish helps me retain the words I've learned. When I hear something I think, ahh yes, I remember that word now and it comes right back to me so easy. Watching + sound is far better, but I have found listening to be good also. However, I'm very new to learning languages, this is just my own 'feel' for what helps me.
