Hmm... Often these words are used as the synonyms. But "происходить" has meaning "take place, occur, happen _regularly_, _repeatly_"; another meanings are "come from" and "descend from". "Случаться" has meaning "occur or happen _randomly_ or _irregularly_". 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

"происходить" also has an additional meaning that roughly corresponds to "to descend" - in the biological/evolutionary sense. "человек произошел от обезьяны" = "man descended from apes". "происходить" often (but not always) implies some sort of causal relationship, in fact the word literally means something close to "to come from". "Случаться", on the other hand has the same stem as "случай" ("random occurrence/chance") - and there is some sort of difference between the two in how they are used in the present/future tenses, as "Случаться" has a more illogical/random feel to it than "происходить". But in the past tense, in the meaning that was mentioned in this thread's name, что случилось/что произошло both mean pretty much the same thing: "what happened".
