I did a search but can't find anyone who has used the program yet, other than the brief demo on their website.
i'm about done my pimsleur III, am working through my rosetta stone and am curious about Fluenz.
(studying Spanish)

not tried it but came very close to buying Mandarin Fluenz.
But in email i was told only 300 words are taught.
this is great for absolute beginners.
But because i finished Pimsleur - it seems useless for me.

I tried Rosetta Stone Spanish and was not happy with it at all. The sessions were the same boring, repetitive activity over and over, and all it taught me were random words that would not be useful if I travelled like "red" and "ball", etc. It did not teach me how to build a sentence or grammar. There was also no cultural immersion - just the same pictures of people that are on OTHER languages such as Mandarin and Swahili. I was so bored and uninspired I quit.
Since then I have found Fluenz - a MUCH better self teaching program you can do on your computer. It teaches useful information, how to build a sentence. It offers many different activities so that you never get bored. It shows you people and places in the countries of the language you are studying instead of "generic" people. It is fun, inspiring, and useful. On the Fluenz website you can try it for free without even registering or giving any personal information. As soon as I tried it I was completely hooked, and now I want all of their languages! And it costs less than Rosetta Stone!

I looked at the preview on their website. I think it will be successful if it is well
marketed. It seems to mix aspects of a classroom experience with rosetta-stone like
activities. For a beginner it would give you a strong foundation to build off of when
you're finished it. I would consider getting it for a non indo-european language like
Mandarin.

I've done the Mandarin demo and if it wasn't for the price I'd have bought the Chinese course by now. Or maybe if the demo had been a bit longer. I'm certainly intrigued by the way it's presented -- it seems kind of halfway between Michel Thomas and Pimsleur....

Does the Mandarin course really only have 300 words?
