In fact, I believe that Anki (the flash card software system mentioned above) limits the daily use by default to ten minutes. |

Huh? I can easily have the program running for longer than that, especially considering that the program (after a finished "daily session") says how many words you'll have to review "tomorrow" (which usually in my case are at least 300 words). You might confuse it with the delay of a word you don't know (which I think is 10 minutes, but you can change that if you want). |

I do apologise if you felt I was criticizing Anki in any way. I was not - it is a splendid tool.
Instead, I pointed out that the DEFAULT session limit is 10 minutes. Similarly, the default card limit per session is just 20 cards. Of course, you can override these default settings very easily - and many people do precisely that.

As a practitioner of the "sentence method," my times are totally dependent on how many cards I have due that day and how many I've added the day before. At the very most, it takes about an hour total, and usually, around half an hour. Even with the occasional spikes in study time, I find this method much more satisfying than vocab lists, which gets boring for me really quickly.
For Latin, I do this shortly after getting dressed and eating breakfast. For German, after school and homework (I think I should move this study time to the morning as well, especially with my course load this year, but I digress.)

My "default" time spent on flashcards is 20 minutes at a time. That is, I'll do 20 minutes -- then if I'm bored, I'll find something else to do. If I want to continue, I'll continue. Typically I'll do multiple sessions per day depending on time constraints and how I feel.
I recently started using the sentence method (was using individual words before) and I find that it keeps me interested longer, as long as the sentences I choose are somewhat new and interesting. Though that may simply be due to the "new and different" feel of the method so far.

The session limit doesn't cause anything to happen in Anki except revert back to the home screen of the deck you're working with (generally your study options). To continue you merely click the review more button, or the space bar, and then you're right back into it. A useful feature if you're like me and have a habit of getting absorbed in your studying and forget to blink, look away from the computer screen, and relax your eyes or hands so as to not cause injury. But then again, I generally use Anki about 2 hours a day for active reviewing. Depending on my spare time I add anywhere from 50-150 new cards a day, and then the time it takes to review starts to stack up....
