S/W tool to learn spelling of new words? | ||

Does anybody know of a tool that lets you check whether you can spell words in the foreign language that you are studying.
Anki doesn't quite do that, as far as I can make out. Although I see the foreign word written down in Anki, I do not have to type it. Right now I am using handwritten glossary lists to drill in the spelling. But it would be good with an electronic tool that asks me to not only say what the foreign word is, but spell it out on the keyboard. Any suggestions? I don't know any, but all you really need is a pronouncing dictionary, or failing that, some text to speech software, and a few lines of coding. If you don't know how to do it, ask some friend to write it for you. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Maybe I am missing something in your question ... but Anki does have a "Type In Answers" option which does what I think you are looking for.
In addition to Anki I have been using BYKI for a while and this has this option too. I prefer BYKI - although the useful version of it does cost money - whereas Anki is, of course, completely free and therefore great value. EDIT: Sorry, I should have explained how to turn on the "type in answer" option in Anki: 1. From the "Settings" menu choose "Deck Properties" 2. Then on the "Models & Properties" tab, choose "Edit" 3. Splog, thanks! Just checking it now, but I really think this solves my problem.

For a cheap vocabulary builder and spelling trainer I can recommend DeClan Software. They have a program for around $50 USD that works well for this purpose and is expandable. There is a free 30-day download to test it. There is also a limited speech capability with it. The website is www.declan-software.com. If your looking for translation, spellcheck and native speaker pronounciation, I would highly recommend LINGVO. It also has a 30-day trial download. If you don't mind the cost, they can be found at www.abbyy.com. If I am simply checking spelling, I use the MS Word spellchecker, where I installed a Russian dictionary. I know it is not very practical but I MS Excel to do it. What I do is to have a column with the word in L1, a hidden column with the word in L2, a blank column and another column with an "if" function (if "a2=c2"; right; wrong). Since Ms Excel will distinguish if you type something like "das Kartovel" instead of "die Kartoffel" (the German word for potato), you will end up learning how to spell it well.
I also use an aleatory function to rearrange the words I am memorizing/learning. 1 person has voted this message useful |
