When I resume my Spanish study, I'm tempted to read, possibly L-R, Cervante's Don Quijote. However, I've read a few posts, by Hencke and others, that self dentistry is a less painful experience. What are people opinions on this ?

[EDIT - Changed back to Spanish spelling]

the book is great. it does, however, have some deprecated vocab and grammar, but not so much that it would be unintelligible to the educated Spanish speaker. (somewhat like shakespeare is to the modern English language, some expressions may be over one's head, but it's mostly understandable.)
i'd recommend you do a search in the fora, i'm sure "don quijote" has been discussed in several occasions already.

I would rather read the books. Self dentisty is a very painful experience, but here in the UK we have little choice. Dentists are very hard to find unless you are rich. I often wonder if our difficulty learning other languages is due to our rotten teeth.

I emptied a box room in the basement last week, and there I found some of my old books from my study time. That included at least seven volumes of Don Q in Spanish. I had a peek in some of them andt didn't find the language too difficult to understand. But it is totally unrealistic that I should ever want to read any novel in seven volumes in any language so I threw the whole lot out. And felt good about it.

... seven... volumes? who wrote the other 5? Miguel de Cervantes wrote:
"El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha" in 1605 and
"El ingenioso caballero don Quijote de la Mancha" in 1615... and that's it... either the publisher of those books divided them into more volumes (which is ridiculous, given that neither is really all that long), or you had "sequels" written by other people. (It really is not that long).

Ha ha, good one ! But I don't recall actually describing it as painful, just that it can get rather boring, a wasted effort, and probably isn't your most effective choice as learning material until you are at a fairly advanced level.

On the other hand, if you are attracted by this particular book, it would be a pity to not give it a shot. Don't let anything I say hold you back. The importance of motivation should never be underestimated and as you apparently are motivated it might be totally different in your case. You can always try it on for size for a few chapters, I think it is even available on-line, and then decide based on you own experience.

PS. The same goes for self-dentistry of course ;o).
