Totally true (and I love that essay :D ). I just don't understand why he insists on his "zug"s. There's hardly a word that uses that. At least not in modern German.


Off the top of my head, "Zug" can mean train, pull, move (in a board game) breath, draft (of wind) and trait, among other things. Then there's compounds like Aufzug, Einzug, Rückzug and so forth. And of course "zügig".

Granted, the verb form "ziehen" probably would have been a better choice (that word really does seem to make up a good half of German vocabulary), but "Zug" certainly occurs in a wide range of seemingly unconnected (or at least very loosely connected) contexts.
