For many people, Kanji are a pain. But I just want to learn more and more.

I have came up with a new method.

I use this site which lists all the Kanji for each radical.

http://dearbooks.cafe.coocan.jp/kotoba03.html

For each radical I observe at the Kanji which are not include in the Joyo list, I judge their importance according to the vocabulary associated with each given Kanji and then I add them to my list and learn them.

For example, for the 女 radical for example, there are the following kanji.

I look through them and choose all the important one and learn them grouped together.

Then I start again with another radical.

Does anyone else do anything like this?

Remembering the Kanji (which I'm using at the moment) uses something very similar to this. Only it doesn't just teach you the 'important' ones, it teaches you all 2000 joyo. It's also incredibly easy. If you haven't picked it up, I highly suggest you do. Most people agree, it's almost a miracle, for people who want to learn the kanji.

Oh, I have already learned the Joyo Kanji list. I now just want to add a thousand or so Kanji more which seem useful.

Hm, I think Heisig has a book for those who want to do just that. It assumes that you have mastered the ~2000 Joyo kanji and teaches about a thousand more kanji for upper level reading/writing. Here's the link to it on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Remembering-Kanji-Characters-Upper-Lev el-Proficiency/dp/0824831675/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid= 1250084898&sr=8-3

(The link has two spaces in it, which the forum doesn't seem to allow me to remove, so you'll have to fix that yourself when you copy it into your browser.)

Remembering the Kanji 3?

There's also the 人名用漢字 (kanji used for names).

Then there's always the 日本漢字能力検定試験 (Japanese Kanji Aptitude Test). Level 1 tests knowledge of 6000 kanji. Here's a spreadsheet with all of those kanji listed by level.

If you type the link like this:

http://www.whatever.com

...you get this:

http://www.amazon.com/Remembering-Kanji-Characters-Upper-Lev el-Proficiency/dp/0824831675/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid= 1250084898&sr=8-3

The spaces only appear in the displayed text -- the actual clickable link should be correct.
