I've noticed that you have many words for "it" in Russian.
это, он, она, оно, and I think there is another one. I just can't think of it right now.
I know that the latter three words can also mean for he, she, (neuter form it). Where
does Это come into this (I know it can also be "this" also)?

If you are new to languages with genders, just remember that you refer to it with the
pronoun of the corresponding gender.
Я имею стол. Он в море.
зто does mean "this" but just like in English, you would say, This is cool. However, in
Russian I assume it needs to correspond to the correct gender, which I think are этот
это эта.

Это can be neuter singualar for this, it can mean "this is" or "it is" (like it's a pen),
it can also be a particle between the subject and the predicate if both are nouns:
Москва - это столица России.
It can be used like it's ... which/that/who: Это ты должен платить мне деньги.

As a non-native speaker of English I (used to?) need to remind myself to say "it" when I'm tempted to use "this" (which is more similar to our это than "it"). Basically, it does mean "this" but we just use it more.
It's also used as a filler, similar to "so", maybe. Kinda like a natural continuation of ээээ:)
