On the standard packages, NO. Rubbish isn't it?
Everywhere else in Europe you can get more German TV than you can shake a stick at, but not in the UK!
My provider Tiscali offers Bollywood, an African and at least 10 American channels but not a single channel in German or EVEN French!
I particularly wanted Arte, TV5 France and any German news channel, but couldn't find any package that offered any of this. I'm sure I checked Sky because it's available in my area.
I've given up on TV in this country, all you can get is the standard British and American shows and news. Sigh! The complete lack of TV in any other language is part of the reason for most peoples inability to speak other languages. Sad state of affairs and contribute in making Brits feel special and not part of Europe.
EDIT: Since you've got your own dish, all you need to do is adjust it to a sattellite that offers European broadcasting.
This means you won't get some of the UK channels that you have now, but you'll get other channels instead, a lot of it in English. You can get the non-British versions of BBC for instance.
There's still Discovery, Sky News, Eurosport and most of the standard channels you are used to.
You'd get most of the channels for free, but as normal you have to pay for the premium content unless you want to 'tinker' with the box.
Here is a UK sattellite site. That's the kind of place you need to go to to solve this.

You could try the websites of the tv channels.
In particulary I like the homepage of ZDF. They have a huge amount of videos online. (Check for ZDF Mediathek). Not only do they upload news, but also documentaries and stuff. You can watch them there even before they have been on air! Like today you'll find a over 40min. documentary about King Ashoka... might be interesting ;)

Have you tried myspass.de?
Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it works outside of Germany.

Replace your dish with a dual LNB one (Astra and Eutelsat) - pretty cheap. Watching free German TV in Europe is not a problem. Lots of channels. If you got a free dish and receiver from your provider you may be certain they're worth what you paid for them.
