Does anyone know of a program or web site that lets you calculate the frequency of words in a specific text? (i.e. rank them in order of most-used)
The best would be software that can recognize different forms of the same word and group them together, but even being able to order individual spellings would be useful.
Basically, I'm going through stories on librivox.org (and finding the written transcriptions on gutenberg.org) and trying to listen and read along. What I'd like to do before-hand is calculate the most common words in that story that I don't already know. Then I can make flash cards or study them, and therefore have a better chance of understanding the story. Plus, searching for those words and hearing them in a real context should help me remember them much better than just flipping through flash cards.
It would also be interesting to analyze my own writing and see what words are most common.
Thanks for the help,

There are plenty such tools. Google is your friend here. Search for "Word Frequency Counter" to find one you like.
