I was browsing DLI's site and noticed that they have a number of new, web-based Headstart courses available.
The cool thing is, they appear to be totally downloadable. The French one (for example) is 800+M. The
Mandarin one is over 1G!
The languages they have are:
Chinese (Mandarin)
Dari
French
Iraqi
Korean
Pashto
Persian-Farsi
Russian
Spanish
Urdu
Uzbek

They have a press contact at PRES.HS_PROJECT@CONUS.ARMY.MIL. It might be interesting to ask what the
redistribution restrictions are for these courses. I'm sure the VagabondPilgrim and the rest of the FSI bunch
would love to be able to share these. (Or at least take them off the US Govt's servers -- my download is coming
down at only 80k/s)

When I attempted to use the Uzbek one online, it asked me to log in. I hope when your download finishes, it isn't locked! Let us know what the new courses are like once you've had a chance to try it out.

If you just put in an unknown username/password, it asks you to register and presents you with a form. I didn't go
any further than that since I was downloading it anyway. Let me know what you find :)

Well, the download completed but when I open the starting html file, the flash program appears to load but then
nothing is displayed. I'm not prompted for a password or anything, it just appears to simply not work. This may be
because I'm using Chrome, but I tested Firefox and Opera too. It seems like there's probably just some weird
configuration tweak that needs to be done in order for it to work. Maybe there's something about the download
that it doesn't like being run from the file system? I'm not sure. In either case, the flv,mp3, and pdf resources that
are included are all there and readable: it's just the Adobe Flash framework part that ties them all together and
presents them to the user that is kind of broken.
Maybe somebody who's better at debugging Flash can help here? Or maybe this is where we should contact the
email address above and report a bug?

Thanks for the link.
I'm downloading it now @154 kb/sec so not too bad.
Strange that they would provide a off-line version that doesn't work. I'll give it a go in IE and see if it runs up. I've got the debug version of the Flash Player installed, so that may give some more info.
edit: Doesn't work in IE and it gives a Security sandbox violation because it's running locally and trying to access the file system. If I host it in a locally running webserver, then it starts up ok and the same login page appears as on the main site. Login and I'm good to go.

I haven't worked with the downloaded version of this Headstart, but I know that they ask you to register just so they can keep track of your progress from session to session. It won't even remember your data if you move to a different computer.

That's good to know about it working over a local webserver. I'll see if I can get lighttpd working on my Mac
tonight. For people running Linux, lighttpd is probably a good choice to serve the static content of the course.
What did you use for Windows? Is there a easy-to-setup server language enthusiasts running Windows could
install?

The downloads seem to be cutting out a few hundred megabytes in, and it acts like the download is completed, even though it isn't. The server doesn't seem to have any resume function either.
