I just had a look at Germinal, I have a minor nitpick. AFAIK, in French, there should be a space before and after colons, semicolons, question marks, exclamation points and French quotation marks.

Yes, you're right. The text was copy/pasted from Project Gutenberg. I'm not sure if
it's an actual space, or if something done automatically by a word processing program. I'll check. I think InDesign puts a special space character automatically when you type. This text was produced in Excel. I'll try again doing the layout in Indesign, which will give a nicer appearance, but it struggles with very long tables. The table would need to be divided into pieces. There is an intermediate format: a simple, but very long table. It could be saved as HTML, Excel, RTF etc., and edited and improved by volunteers. For long books like this (around 150,000 words), it would need very dedicated volunteers. If there's a text you'd like in this format, and you think it's in the public domain, let me know. Have you considered making this into an iPad application? One could easily listen to the text as they read, on the same device. Moreover, the actual book format makes it difficult to include more than two languages, whereas such an application could include several languages and the reader could pick whichever two he wishes to read, or perhaps more than two languages at once. My first impression is that it is very good. I have a question about the text, which I couldn't find an explanation of anywhere in the book. Certain sentences are underlined, but the reason is not given. What is different about those sentences? 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I should have included an explanation in the book. The lines serve to break up the longer paragraphs (those longer than about four lines) into aligned chunks. Otherwise, it's possible that things can get a bit out-of-sync, and it can be difficult to find the corresponding place in the other language. As jazzboy said, the idea is to make it easier to jump between the two texts.
Arekkusu, yes, this has been in my mind since the beginning. It's not by chance the dimensions of the text are on the page of the books corresponds very closely to the dimensions of the screen of the iPad. It opens up a number of interesting possibilities. 1 person has voted this message useful |
