Hi,

I know that Le can also be used as a direct object when referring to a male instead of Lo:

Yo le veo - I see him or I see you (if you is a male)

But, what about Les when Les is a group mixed of men and women:

Can I say "Yo les veo" in this instance where "les" is "them" (group of men and women) or "you plural" (group of men and women)?

Thanks a lot.

Steven

I'm still learning Spanish, so I'm not sure, but doing a quick search of an elementary Spanish reader I come up with:

Nosotros les acompanaremos.
Despues de una pausa, el preceptor les habló.
Él les preguntó si querían comer algo.

So apparently the answer is yes.

Chapter 12 of this great book has 12 pages just on le/les and lo/la/los/las. I'm sure there's discussion of this
question there.

If you treat them as ustedes, direct object LES is accepted as ''leísmo de cortesía''.

Just for clarification, Fiziwig, in the last two sentences the "les" in fact have the function of the indirect object, which is how most people will ever learn and see "les" used. So those are not cases of using it as a direct object

The first sentence is in fact a use of "les" as a direct object instead of "los", which obviously can be used in that situation. You can't use "los" under any circumstance in the other two sentences.

In a very "technical" comment, if you do use "les" as a direct object, it would be to refer to a group of mixed males and females. "Los" would then be a group of exclusive males, and obviously "las" exclusive females.
