I don't know if this helps, but the subjunctive mood is similar in idea to the old Finnish mood of the 'Potential'.
E.g. Kokous alkanee vasta myöhemmin. - The meeting may start later
Hän lähtenee huomenna - He probably leaves tomorrow.

I think it's better to be aware of it grammatically and absorb it through listening. I remember when it dawned on me in Spanish, it was like a door opened into this huge expanse, like a path (of uncertainty) splitting off and suddenly I knew how to express doubt in Spanish but more than that - I felt it. I was no longer mechanically changing the vowel sound because X structure implies the subjunctive.
