Lately, I’ve been using the L-R method as my foremost form of language study (here’s the original L-R thread for anyone still unfamiliar with it: http://www.how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.a sp?TID=6366). I’ve also recently started learning Irish Gaelic (Gaeilge), but to my dismay I had a much harder time finding materials for Irish than for other languages I’ve tried the method on. However, after some effort and some extra help from Teango’s very useful thread about Irish language materials ( http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?T ID=25204&PN=1), I have been able to find enough materials to L-R this language properly in the (hopefully near) future. Since other people may be having just as much trouble as I did, I thought that I would list the materials that are available in Irish that would be appropriate for Listening-Reading (Irish audio, Irish text, English text). I’ve also listed some L2-L2 materials, which one could partially L-R and which might help with pronunciation (Irish is pretty difficult to pronounce correctly), reading skills, etc.

If anyone knows of additional L-R materials, please mention them in this thread or elsewhere on the board.

For convenience sake, I’ve included links to where the materials can be bought or downloaded--there may be other places where these materials can be gotten, but these were the ones that I was able to find. If the links violate any sort of rule of the board, I will be happy to repost this message without the links (needless to say, I have no connection with any of these sites). I’ve used Amazon and Litriocht (as well as archive.org and wikisource online) before successfully. I don’t personally know about the other sites. At this point, I have bought or saved the chapters from Matthew, Mo Sgéal Féin/My Story, Séadna, Labharfad Le Cach/I Will Speak to You All, and Úlla. They all look like they will work OK for my purposes (although I’ll save Úlla for the end since the available English translations of the stories are very, very loose). There are also a fair number of dual/parallel Irish-English texts out there to continue with once you run out of L-R materials and have gotten Irish pronunciation down.

For some reason, all the L-R appropriate Irish audio books that I’ve listened to so far are in the Munster dialect. It may just be tough luck if you’re trying to learn Standardized Irish or the Connacht or Ulster dialects.

Irish L-R Materials:
(Audiobook in Irish = Closleabhar)

Irish and English texts and Irish audio available:

-Séadna - Peadar Ua Laoghaire

[Audio book blurb: “A new edition of this major classic, complete and unabridged. This is an updated and revised text prepared by Liam Mac Mathúna and contains a comprehensive new preface to introduce Séadna to new generations. The 8 CDs and booklet are attractively packaged.”]

-Peig Sayers: Labharfad Le Cach / I Will Speak to You All
[Short stories and reminiscences; Dual language text with CDs (approx. 2 hours) [all-in-one package]; old recordings of Peig Sayers herself telling these stories; Sayers was from the Blasket Islands of County Kerry, near Dingle (Munster dialect); http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/184840008X/ref=s9_simh_se_p 14_d0_g14_i7?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=auto-no-results-c enter-1&pf_rd_r=0QWC3YCNQ868A5F6GV8R&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_p=126 3465782&pf_rd_i=%C3%83%C2%9Alla%20Mac%20Math%C3%83%C2%BAna (prices of used texts vary) or http://www.newisland.ie/books/fiction-open-doors/peig-sayers -labharfad-le-c%C3%A1ch-i-will-speak-you-all/9781848400870 (24.95 Euros)]
[Blurb: “Previously unpublished stories by Peig Sayers. Severely 'edited' by the cultural powers that formed and built the new Irish state, Peig was a compulsory text on the Irish Leaving Certificate exams for generations of pupils. But there was a lot more to Peig than tales of poverty and hardship - in this selection of previously unpublished stories, a new, earthier, funnier and more dramatic storyteller emerges. Based on RTAe, UCD and BBC archives, and translated by UCD's Bo Almqvist and Padraig A"'Healai, Ireland's leading experts on Peig, the book includes CDs with archived recordings of Peig telling these stories, and is published in a unique dual-language edition.”]

-Úlla - Seán Mac Mathúna
[Modern audio recordings of the short stories from Úlla: Niall Tóíbín ag léamh Gearrscéalta le Seán Mac Mathúna; sample clip on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SM_J33TW2A0; audio (4 CDs): http://www.litriocht.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=5 905 or http://coislife.ie/Leabhar.aspx?ID=4 (18 Euros); Text (Irish): http://www.litriocht.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=3 442 (16 Euros) or http://www.amazon.com/Ulla-Irish-Sean-Mac-Mathuna/dp/1901176 541 (used prices vary); Partial English text: http://www.amazon.com/Atheist-Other-Stories-Sean-MacMathuna/ dp/0863271030/ref=tmm_pap_title_0 (various used prices)]
[English texts of some but not all of these stories are available--however, please note that they were translated by the author in an extremely loose and creative manner: Úlla is a compilation of stories from the author’s earlier collections Ding and Banana (both Irish language books), plus some additional content; The Atheist (in English) is a translation of Ding; These are the stories included in The Atheist that, I believe, are also included on the audio book and in the Irish text: Wedge, The Banquet of Life, A Straight Run Down to Killcash, The Quizmasters, and The Isle of Geese; The audio book has 8 stories on it (2 per disc), which include most, but not all, of the stories printed in Úlla; narrated by Irish actor/comedian Niall Tóibín, a native Irish speaker from Cork (Munster dialect)]

-Irish Proverbs Sean Fhocail CD-ROM
[Dual digitized text of 501 Irish proverbs w/ readings of the proverbs by a native Irish speaker; http://www.litriocht.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=1 59 (30 Euros)]
[“Our ancestor's wisdom made available in the most modern medium of them all - CD ROM. 501 Irish proverbs with translations into English. A useful resource for learners as well, given that each proverb is read aloud by a native speaker of Irish. There are also notes on the grammar and vocabulary of the proverbs”]

-Linguaphone Irish
[Although not an regular book, this could legitimately be adapted to the L-R method]

The following sources I found on Teango’s post. Does anyone know if any of these are abridged? They are on the expensive side for only one hour-long audio books and (what must be) *very* short texts, even if they are not abridged:

Also, for anyone interested in Celtic languages in general, a very recent translation of the Bible in Welsh (2004) that is appropriate for L-R’ing is available for free online. This is the only thing that I could find for free online that was suitable for Listening-Reading Welsh (are there any other online L-R materials in Welsh???). The text (which can be made parallel along side English in the program) can be downloaded via the free eSword program (which unfortunately also has to be downloaded and installed first). After installation, just go to “Download” in the menu bar and scroll down to the very bottom of the list to the Welsh Bible and download that. I got the audio from the Audio Bible Ambassador on the Faith Comes by Hearing website that Prof. Arguelles recommended a while back on the board and has included on his website. (You don’t have to download this one unless you want to, since it streams on their website too.)

BTW, does anyone know of a complete audio recording of the Bible in Irish? That would be *a lot* of audio material if something like that actually exists.
