I recently joined Frenchpod101, and took up their offer of a month's membership for $1. I was able to access most of the member's materials, but other features of this special offer did not materialize. You were supposed to be able to download a course from their store for free, but it was not possible. I contacted customer service, but heard nothing in reply.
Even worse, they extended my subscription for another month without permission, charging me almost $30. I have emailed them but still have heard nothing. Perhaps this is how they make their money.
Has anyone else had a bad experience with Frenchpod101? How did you resolve the problem?

I wouldn't write them off just yet. It may be that your emails are not getting through. I think this is a big organisation with several language podcast courses, so they'd be doing themselves no favours by dealing with people dishonestly on a regular basis. Before joing or looking into buying anything online I usually Google the item or site and 'complaints' and then 'scam'. There are sites like Complaints Board where people who have been cheated in some way go to vent, but for Frenchpod101 nothing bad is coming up. Oh, and they have affiliate programs so they are bound to get lots of sites offering very positive reviews, but really, if they are so bad, someone would have vented by now. Maybe you will be the first. If you don't get satisfaction, go to your credit card company and initiate a chargeback. Good luck!

I recently ordered books online and I haven't gotten them yet.
I suggest you wait and see what happens. You might be in the wrong anyway since you probably didn't read the fine print. $1 offers are always accompanied by footnotes and sneaky "down-payment" rules.

I joined Frenchpod101 maybe a year ago, during one of their similar promotions. I was able to cancel at the end of the trial and didn't have any problems (though they still continue to send me email advertisements often). I also have had a membership to Japanesepod101 for a long time and have not had any issues with them so far. Maybe you could try contacting the Innovative Language Learning parent company directly?
Oh, and I think that it is standard practice when companies offer you a trial membership to a website. They often auto renew at the end of the trial period, unless you cancel them, and this is probably written in the fine print somewhere. Are you saying you canceled, but then they continued to charge? If you are using PayPal to handle your subscription payments, you have to log in on PayPal and cancel the re-occurring payment there as well, or they will continue to make payments on your behalf. If that's what happened, you can put the charge into dispute. This happened to me once with a different membership subscription and I was able to get a refund.

Update: half an hour ago, I received a refund from the company. I guess they are a trustworthy company after all.
So the lesson is, if you sign up for their 1 month trial, you need to cancel or they will automatically extend it.

They used to give a week for free. In that time, one could download everything. Is that no longer the case?

No, that's no longer the case. At least, it seems like most of the lessons are now only available to members.
Tip of the day:
Read the fine print, like starrye said and like I said before.
That being said, demanding a refund is also an option.
You have to be extra wary when you order stuff on the internet.
