I am using Assimil for about 75% of my French study and while I am enjoyiing it I have to say that there is
not enough repetition for me to truly absorb most of the lessons. I find that making flashcards for key
vocab and idiomatic phrases helps me tremendously as does writing out the lessons, but then I wonder if
this means my learning style must not be suited to the Assimil's philosophy and maybe I should focus on
other programs. Any comments would be appreciated.

Assimil courses can be used in many different ways. They generally have good content and a good progression in content and doing what you want to help ensure you better assimilate the lessons should in know way mean that you should stop using Assimil.
I am finding the New French With Ease a fantastic course and as I am now going through the active wave I am making flaschards to help me remember the vocabulary better.

Why don't you save yourself the bother and wasted time of making cards and go back and review old lessons on regular basis? The book is small enough to carry around.

I actually find it is a good idea to mix up the content. I put the words in as I go along. I have about 500 through lesson 68.
You can get a little locked into seeing the words in a particular context, adding some randomness to it does help. For example, I saw Ehe on Anki and didn't know what it was until I thought back to lesson 47. You should be training yourself to not think back to Assimil, but to automatically know what the word means.

I'm also using flashcards (Anki) with Assimil. Thus far I've found it to be a good
course, but I do best with a mix of content. Whether or not it strictly follows the
Assimil philosophy, I find it works better for me, and that's really all that matters for
me. I find that using flash cards to pop the word up and make me think of it every once
in a while is helpful, so I use flash cards.

I just updated my Anki flashcards for the last 20+ lessons from Assimil (42-62), and I've
been amazed how much vocabulary is in there. I'm with you: there isn't enough repetition
for me to really remember all that vocabulary. I've also noticed that I might understand
a word in the context of the Assimil dialogue, but that I've needed to use a dictionary
to enter the core definition. This is new - I didn't notice this in the first dozen
lessons.
I find the flashcards very helpful, both creating them and using them.

Only on the 7th planet from the sun. On Earth, they aren't of much use to someone who has reached her goals, for
example.
