You can get free software to convert your scans to epub or mobi files which I believe can be read on Kindle. I have a cheap scanner which scans to pdf files as an option. |

This would have been a good idea if not for the fact that Amazon does not deliever Kindle to Singapore! I need to go through complicated procedures as mentioned in this link:

the track on your audio device while travelling in a crowded bus or metro. I plan to use
Assimil while I am travelling. Does anyone know whether Assimil releases their methods in
digital format such as e-book in pdf format or apps for iphones?
In which format did you want the book? It is not hard to scan the book to a digital format or to convert the audio to mp3. What have you got in mind? Then we can possibly help.

You don't need to use Amazon to import your own pdf files to your Kindle. I do it all the time and it doesn't matter if you live on a tiny island in the Caribbean, NYC, London or Timbuktu. If you have a Kindle, you don't need Amazon's permission to put your own files on it. I've never used Assimil, but I have seen it. Assimil's formatting is not optimized for creating an e-book. You'd have to scan it and print it to pdf.
To transfer, just hook up the usb cable to your computer and move the files to your Kindle file. Pdf's will read much better on a tablet, but I have many pdf files on my Kindle and I can indeed read them. The ones that are formatted from ocr scan- single page, clear text, no tables, single column convert quite well to .mobi format.
As has been said, you can scan your book and make a pdf file, easy peasy. There are illegal copies available out there, but is it wrong to obtain an electronic file if you already own the physical book? This is a moral question and also a practical one. I'd say you'd be better off morally and practically by scanning your own book and taking the care and time to customize the pdf file to your own needs by eliminating unneeded space and optimizing the text for your own reading needs, and then you can more easily learn on the go.
Your computer is a wonderful tool that can do many things besides surfing the web. You have to be a little bit tech savvy to do some of those things but you don't have to be a techno-wizard. I own a scanner and it comes in quite handy in my work and personal use.
